I really like this stereo. It has great sound, and I love that it takes 8 D batteries so that it lasts a long time when running off battery power.

I purchased the boom box as a birthday gift for my daughter. I wanted a good one, and finally settled on the Altec Lansing inMotion MIX. My daughter lives in a different state than I, so I had it shipped directly to her. It arrived on time as promised, but unfortunately, it was missing critical pieces! No cords, no battery, no remote... The unit was useless. This was unfortunate and certainly upset me, but what happened next was the worst part. I tried and tried to get in touch with customer service to let them know what happened and to try to get the replacement parts quickly sent out to my daughter. That was impossible to do. I was not aware that since the product was purchased via Amazon.com through "warehouse central" I would have to contact Warehouse Central directly with my complaint. So, I did. A week later, no response. I began to worry that I had just lost $200. I then sent a complaint to Amazon.com customer service and finally got a response from Warehouse Central! Their response was cold and told me to ship the product back. Once they received it, they would issue a refund. My daughter shipped it back 2 weeks ago via UPS and has the confirmation that it has been received. I still have not received the refund. I will NEVER again order a product this way again.

The biggest complaint is that with time I can tell this will fall apart. Plastic is not a replacement for metal, period. The sound quality, after setting up your own EQ, is outstanding for such a small system. The highest the device can go is 40db in volume which can be rather loud depending on your environment and your proximity to the iMT800. Just keep in mind that your average party in a medium sized apartment is somewhere between 30-50db meaning if you want to pump music over talking this isn't going to work for you. If you're planning on using the iMT800 in a city environment with a larger crowd you're talking closer to 60db. In addition your sound waves will not have much to bounce off of loosing the large majority of the sound.
Someday they'll make a boom box capable of 80db! Someday.

if you like bassheavy full sound, you will love the MIX. if you prefer detailed hifi-sound, you will be better off with harman kardon go&play or even more expensive solutions like B&W zeppelin, which is not portable tough.
the MIX blows away any battery-driven speaker that i know. although the harman kardon go&play sounds perfect when plugged in it becomes rather tinny when played from batteries. not so the MIX, it sounds heavy and bassy even from batteries. there is hardly any bass-loss but only a slight sound-decline if run from batteries, but the differences are minimal compared to the go&play.
the MIX also has a dynamic equalization, so that it will never distort regardless of the volume. this might sometimes become annoying though as bass gets weaker the louder you turn it. it doesn't sound that good at maximum volume out of 40, it sounds best between 25-35. up from there bass gets less and less and starts sounding rather compressed.
regarding maximum volume: you won't be able to rattle a full dance-hall with it, but it is enough for annoying your nearby neighbors or to fill a whole living-room with sound. at normal listening levels it compares quite well to my tall hifi-speakers while being much smaller, the sound just starts to fall apart at higher listening levels. therefore try avoiding maximum volume and only turn it up to 35 or 37.
there is a 7-band EQ available with some simultaneous button-press, and i would suggest to actually use it. with the EQ-presets or flat-eq settings the MIX doesn't sound that good. i prefer turning down mid-bass frequencies near 160Hz while turning up frequencies from 2kHz upwards. if you want some deep-bass you can even crank up 60Hz and it will get a kind of subwoofer-sound without the original mid-bass hump.
one problem i have with the MIX is the size and the looks. it is much too big, to be carried around whole the time. the bose sounddock portable is much smaller and lighter while producing a similarly full sound, except the deep-bass the MIX is able to pump out. but funnily enough the bose sounddock portable is able to achieve a higher maximum volume than the MIX, although the bose already starts to distort at these levels. i don't care much for the retro-design either. i think it looks rather cheap and embarrassing, but overall for me the sound was more important.
also wanted to mention that i experienced some instability-issues which probably occured during switch from mains-operation to batteries, or during change from ipod to iphone etc. when this happened the device asked me for FM-region and all my EQ settings had gone. it already happened to me twice, so it doesn't seem that uncommon.
to tell the truth i still prefer the bose sounddock portable as an all-around speaker for use at home, garden, picnic or at the beach. it is smaller, not that heavy, runs from rechargeable batteries, which you don't have to take out every time you have to recharge, and the sound is similarly full, especially regarding the relative size. of course the MIX blows away the bose when it comes to bass-quality and overall clarity. considering the portability-factor, the bose is definitely the better choice but considering price/sound ratio i would of course choose the MIX. so it only depends on what you exactly want.
btw compared to the good old IM7 that i also owned, i think the MIX has a more refined and better sound, not taking the FM tuner and much better ipod-dock into account. and because of the highly customizable EQ (not only Bass/Treble) you can tweak the sound to your liking. im not sure how it compares to the well known JVC boomboxes, but i have heard some of them quite a bit ago and they never impressed me that much like the altec lansing MIX does.

I bought this because my brother dropped my iKick 500 by Kicker and it's hardly a replacement. It has a few extra features, but if you want bone rattling sound you should go for the Kicker products. This is about 2/3rds as loud and doesn't seem to have as good of bass to it. Plus the iKick is much much cheaper.
